The Mandingo Family
German born skipper Andree Hammerschmidt has been around boats all his life, having grown up on the west coast of Africa. In 1988 after extensively sailing the Mediterranean and the Australian waters with his Italian/Dutch wife Maria and their two sons he settled in Costa Rica in the early 90’s.

Mandingo Sailing began with skipper Andree sailing the Lemuria, a 50 classical schooner yacht all the way from France. He crossed the Atlantic ocean on a 24 day journey and sailed through the Panama canal, to finally settle in Tamarindo Beach, on the west coast of Costa Rica.

Sailing in Tamarindo, Costa RicaSkipper Andree is a well experienced and cautious captain who has a lot of tales to tell while he guides the traditionally gaff rigged schooner through the pacific waters off the Tamarindo coastline.

Maria takes care of the ground portion of Mandingo Sailing. She will meet you prior to you departure and will answer any questions you may have. She speaks fluently English, Spanish, German, Dutch and Italian and has basic skills in French.

The motto of this unique family owned business is: ‘If we do something.....we do it all the way!’

The Lemuria
The 50 ft ocean going yacht Lemuria is a replica of the 1800’s traditional vintage schooners designed by a French naval constructor. She was built during an 8-year period in France, equipped to circumnavigate the world and launched in Mediterranean waters in 1998.
Lemuria has a spacious cockpit with the finest teak deck and lots of space for the small groups we carry (no more than 15 passengers).

Below deck she is laid out with mahogany woods according to the unique style of the early 1800’s but with the luxury of modern accessories such as a fully equipped pantry with stove, a dining area, a private cabin, 6 sleeping berths and a head (electrical toilet).

She is well equipped with all safety gear required by Costa Rican law and according to USCG standards. On board are more than 20 life jackets (also for children), 2 life rafts, depth sounder, GPS, EPIRB, VHF radio and cell phone for land communication during the duration of the excursions. Lemuria is registered under Costa Rican flag and has the Costa Rican Navigation Permits.
